Certainly, harmful microorganisms such as viruses and bacteria can contaminate a water dispenser, purifier, or water fountain if they are not properly maintained or installed, or if basic procedures are not followed.
For these reasons, this quarter at DEIAX-AQUOS® we would like to talk more about water contamination, bacteria, and how we can prevent them from entering the water systems from which you drink.
Below are five reasons why proper sanitation of water purifiers or dispensers—combined with best practices in daily use and effective installation by trained personnel—is essential to ensure healthy water:
Avoid Unhealthy Water
Although DEIAX-AQUOS® products are selected and designed to guarantee the highest level of cleanliness and hygiene, no water cooler or purifier is exempt from requiring sanitization. Contaminants inside and around your fountain, dispenser, or purification system are inevitable and must be treated periodically. By using our sanitization kit every 6 months (at a minimum every 12 months) or by contracting our preventive maintenance service, you will keep your water supply fresh and ensure that water dispensing points are hygienic and free of microbes.
Common Issues
Over the years at DEIAX-AQUOS®, we have learned that microbial contamination in drinking water can come from different areas. The most common are:
-
Poor installation practices: for example, when technicians do not wash their hands before installation and touch critical areas or water connections, there is a clear risk of cross-contamination.
-
Residents or employees touching taps or faucets with their hands, resulting in reverse cross-contamination. It is always recommended to avoid touching the faucet with your hands. If necessary, it is very important to wash hands thoroughly beforehand. We also recommend periodically sanitizing both the external and internal parts of the faucet or lever.
-
The drain connection is not properly installed with an air gap, resulting in contact with wastewater and reverse contamination from the drain pipe back into the purifier or water dispenser.
-
Poor disinfection of incoming water due to incorrect chlorine dosing by the municipal water company, resulting in supply water contaminated with microorganisms such as bacteria. Sometimes this may be a one-time issue, but it can still be enough to compromise your equipment.
-
Cross-contamination of water during building renovation or construction work when water pipes are handled. For example, we have encountered cases where residents installed a water softener and experienced bacterial contamination during the installation process.
Maintain Workplace Standards
A poorly maintained water fountain, reverse osmosis system, or water dispenser not only produces unhealthy water, but also negatively affects the overall office or home environment and your organization’s image if high standards of cleanliness and hygiene are not maintained. Employees and visiting clients may form a poor impression of your organization if workplace areas are not clean.
In addition, best practices—such as spraying our Sterizin® (or another food-grade disinfectant spray) on the dispenser and faucet area—are regular habits that help prevent bacterial growth in your machines.
Prevent Maintenance Issues
Any machine that is not properly maintained will eventually deteriorate. This will cause it to stop operating at full capacity and may eventually result in permanent damage. Our disinfection kit or preventive maintenance program can help prevent blockages and buildup in certain areas that could otherwise lead to permanent damage. In such cases, you may need to purchase new parts or bring in professional assistance to properly resolve the issue if your cooling system is neglected for too long.
Easy to Use: Do It Yourself!
You don’t need to be an expert to get the most out of our sanitization kit. The specific instructions on how to use each piece of equipment are very easy to follow, and no complex engineering or maintenance tasks are required. The entire sanitization process is also quick, so you don’t need to dedicate a full day to the task. Additionally, in some cases, when you connect one of the water purifiers to a dispenser, during a filter change some of our models include a chlorine cartridge that automatically disinfects your water purifier and dispenser when the filter is replaced.
Reusability
We recommend performing a disinfection cleaning on your water cooler every six months (at least every 12 months) to keep everything in optimal condition. Our disinfection kit is not a one-time purchase that must be replaced every time you sanitize your cooler. Much of the equipment provided will last for years, so you don’t need to worry about acquiring new equipment each time.
